Annex of the Year 2023 to the Regulations on Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory’s International Competition of Performers on Wind and Percussion Instruments

A.1. General Provisions

A.1.1. The full official name of the competition is The Fourteenth Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory’s International Competition of Performers on Wind and Percussion Instruments (hereinafter to be referred to as “the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition”).

A.1.3. The dates of holding the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition are from 27 October to 1 November 2023 inclusive.

A.1.4. The 14th Wind/Percussion Competition will be held for the following two categories:

  • (1) Flute;
  • (2) Tuba.

A.1.5. The Program of the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition

A.1.5.1. Category Flute

By default, all pieces have to be performed by heart.

Round One — three pieces:

  1. J. S. Bach. Partita in A Minor for solo flute, BWV 1013: I. Allemande (no repeat of the second section);
    II. Courante (no repeat of the second section)
  2. Sergei Rachmaninoff. Vocalise (no repeat of the second section). Version for flute and piano (download PDF: flute part, piano part)
  3. Sigfrid Karg-Elert. From Thirty Caprices for solo flute (Gradus ad parnassum), op. 107: Chaconne

Round Two — three pieces:

  1. Аnastasia Khoroshilova. Jazz(less) for solo flute — to be performed from music (download PDF)
  2. Sergei Prokofiev. Sonata in D Major for flute and piano, op. 94 (1943): either Movements 1 & 2 or Movements 3 & 4 (optionally)
  3. One of the following pieces for flute and piano, optionally:

(a) George Enescu. Cantabile and Presto (1904)
(b) Philippe Gaubert. Nocturne and Allegro scherzando (1906)
(c) Gabrielle Fauré. Fantaisie, op. 79 (1898)
(d) Pierre Sancan. Sonatina (1946)

Round Three — two pieces:

  1. W. A. Mozart. Concerto No. 1 in G Major for flute and orchestra, KV 313
  2. Vladimir Tsybin. Concert Allegro No. 3 in F-sharp Minor for flute and piano (1946). Transcription for flute and orchestra by Valery Kikta — may be performed from music (download PDF: flute part, piano part)

A.1.5.2. Category Tuba

By default, all pieces have to be performed by heart.

Round One — two pieces:

  1. Carlo Tessarini. Sonata in F Major for cello and basso continuo: Andante cantabile and Presto. Version for tuba and piano (download PDF)
  2. Nikolai Rakov. Poetic Fantasia for tuba and piano (1987)

Round Two — three pieces:

  1. Еlena Basova. The Song of A Lonely Earthman for solo tuba — to be performed from music (download PDF)

  3. One of the following concertos for tuba and orchestra adapted for tuba and piano, optionally:

Round Three — two pieces:

A.2. Prizes of the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition

The Organizing Committee shall announce six monetary prizes for the laureates — three ones per each category:

  • (1–2) First Prize of 200,000 (two hundred thousand) rubles each;
  • (3–4) Second Prize of 100,000 (one hundred thousand) rubles each;
  • (5–6) Third Prize of 75,000 (seventy-five thousand) rubles each.

A.4. Procedure for Holding the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition

A.4.3. The 14th Wind/Percussion Competition of the year 2023 consists of three rounds:

Round One, the Rachmaninoff Hall
October 27, Friday, 10:00: Flute
October 28, Saturday, 10:00: Tuba

Round Two, the Rachmaninoff Hall
October 29, Sunday, 10:00: Flute
October 30, Monday, 10:00: Tuba

Round Three, the Great Hall
November 1, Wednesday, 10:00: Flute
November 1, Wednesday, 14:00: Tuba

A.4.8. The award ceremony and the final concert of the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition will take place on
1 November 2023 at 19:00 in the Great Hall
of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.

A.5. Submission of the Application and the Documents

A.5.1. In order to participate in the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition, every applicant must fill out his/her online application
See the list of the other necessary documents in the text of the Regulations (clauses 5.1.2, 5.1.3, 5.1.4, 5.1.5 and 5.4).

A.5.3.1. In addition, every applicant for the Category Flute must submit the video recording of his/her performance of the shortened program of Round One in the form of a valid link to one of the following three “cloud” services: google.com, mail.ru, or yandex.ru. The obligatory technical requirements are as follows: 

  • (1) the video recording has to be made with a still camera as a single frame: no editing is allowed;
  • (2) the link must open one and the only video file of high density;
  • (3) only the AVI, MOV, WMV, or MP4 file formats are admitted;
  • (4) the video file may not be downloaded on any streaming video hosting (e.g. youtube.com, hulu.com, vimeo.com and the like).

A.5.3.2. The performance of the following two pieces has to be submitted on the video recording:

  • (1) J. S. Bach. Partita in A Minor for solo flute, BWV 1013: I. Allemande (no repeat of the second section);

A.5.3.3. Both pieces may be performed from music for the video recording only.

A.5.5. The deadline for submitting the video recording (for the Category Flute), the online application and the documents in order to participate in the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition is 24 September 2023.

A.6. Financial Term

A.6.2. An amount of the registration fee for participation in the 14th Wind/Percussion Competition is, optionally:

  • (1) 3000 (three thousand) Russian rubles;
  • (2) 218 (two hundred eighteen) Chinese yuans;
  • (3) 30 (thirty) US dollars;
  • (4) 29 (twenty-nine) euros.
