International Scholarly and Practical Conference “J. S. Bach and Sons: the Context, Influence and Prospective”

Dear colleagues! The year 2024 marks C. F. E. Bach’s 310th birthday. Featuring this anniversary, the Moscow Conservatory’s Department of Foreign Music History together with the Faculty of Historical and Contemporary Performance have planned a conference and a concert whose participants are to be immersed in the history of the Bachs family and the artistic realm of its famous representatives, as well as to assess their influence on the subsequent European music development.

The events, the dates and the venues

  • The conference: 27 March 2024, Moscow Conservatory, Conference Hall
  • The concert: 28 March 2024, Moscow Conservatory, the Rachmaninoff Hall

Applications for the participation in the conference have to be sent by 1 March 2024 to: nauka@mosconsv.ru (copy: sufiya@yandex.ru).

Consideration is guaranteed to all applications corresponding to the following conference topics:

  • J. S. Bach as a successor of his musical dynasty’s traditions
  • Musical connections between J. S. Bach’s and his sons’ oeuvre
  • J. S. Bach as an outstanding music teacher; his specific teaching methods
  • The role of J. S. Bach’s sons in both preserving and popularizing their father’s oeuvre; posthumous performances of his music
  • The specific role of C. F. E. Bach in the development of the scholarly reception of his father’s oeuvre
  • Individual styles of J. S. Bach’s sons and the musical context of their oeuvre
  • Today’s approaches to the performance of J. S. Bach’s and his sons’ music

The application form has to contain your full name, academic degree and academic title, place of work and job position, e-mail address, contact phone number and the topic of your report, as well as the preferred form of your participation (either in-person or remote).

The application has to be accompanied by a brief abstract of 2000 characters maximum.

Travel and accommodation expenses have to be covered by either the speaker or his/her institution.

The Organizing Committee reserves the right to select the reports on a competitive basis.
