Annex of the Year 2024 to the Regulations on Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory’s International Competition of Performers
on Wind and Percussion Instruments

A.1. General Provisions

A.1.1. The full official name of the competition is The Fifteenth Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory’s International Competition of Performers on Wind and Percussion Instruments (hereinafter to be
referred to as “the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition”).

A.1.3. The dates of holding the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition are from 28 to 31 October 2024 inclusive.

A.1.4. The 15th Wind/Percussion Competition will be held for the following two categories:

  • (1) Percussion Instruments;
  • (2) Woodwind Quintet.

A.1.5. The Program of the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition

A.1.5.1. Category Percussion Instruments

By default, all pieces have to be performed by heart.

Round One — three pieces:

1. Mathew Beck. Excerpt Etude for solo snare drum
2. Two parts of contrasting character from any J. S. Bach’s Sonata or Partita for solo violin or solo cello
(BWV 1001–1012) arranged for solo marimba
3. Claude Debussy. Arabesque for piano, L. 66 No. 1, arranged for solo vibraphone

Round Two — three pieces:

1. The piece for solo marimba winning at the 15th Competition of Composers
as part of the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition — to be performed from music.
2. Elliott Carter. Any piece from Eight Pieces for four tympanis (optionally)
3. One of the following three pieces for percussions (optionally):

  • (a) Eckhard Kopetzki. Canned Heat
  • (b) Michel Cals. No. 3 from Four Inventions for percussions
  • (c) Kevin Volans. Asanga

Round Three — three pieces:

1. Frédéric Macarez. Any piece from Seven Pieces for four and five tympanis (optionally)
2. Iannis Xenakis. Rebonds for percussions: either Part ‘A’ or ‘B’ (optionally)
3. One of the following four pieces for solo marimba (optionally):

  • (a) Zoltán Marján Csaba. Niflheim
  • (b) Zoltán Marján Csaba. Lemuria — The Fallen Civilization
  • (c) Andrew Thomas. Merlin
  • (d) Joseph Schwantner. Velocities

Dear competitors! Should you have any difficulties in finding the music, please don’t hesitate to contact the Organizing Committee.

A.1.5.2. Category Woodwind Quintet

All pieces are to be performed from music.

Round One — two pieces:

1. Eugène Bozza. Scherzo, op. 48
2. Gustav Holst. Quintet in A-flat major, op. 14

Round Two — two pieces:

1. The piece for woodwind quintet winning at the 15th Competition of Composers
as part of the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition.
2. One of the following Quintets by Jean Françaix (optionally):

  • (a) Quintet No. 1
  • (b) Quintet No. 2

Round Three — two pieces:

1. W. A. Mozart. Divertimento in B-flat major, KV 270 (arranged for woodwind quintet by Rudolf Maros)
2. Dmitry Shostakovich. String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, op. 110 (arranged for woodwind quintet by Mark A. Popkin)

A.2. Prizes of the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition

The Organizing Committee shall announce six monetary prizes for the laureates — three ones per each category:

  • (1–2) First Prize of 200,000 (two hundred thousand) rubles each;
  • (3–4) Second Prize of 100,000 (one hundred thousand) rubles each;
  • (5–6) Third Prize of 75,000 (seventy-five thousand) rubles each.

A.3. The Jury Teams of the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition

A.4. Procedure for Holding the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition

A.4.3. The 15th Wind/Percussion Competition of the year 2024 consists of three rounds:

Round One — 28 October 2024, Monday, 10:00:

  • Woodwind Quintet — Small Hall
  • Percussion Instruments — the Rachmaninoff Hall

Round Two — 29 October 2024, Tuesday, 10:00:

  • Woodwind Quintet — Small Hall
  • Percussion Instruments — the Rachmaninoff Hall

Round Three — 31 October 2024, Thursday, 10:00:

  • Woodwind Quintet — Small Hall
  • Percussion Instruments — the Rachmaninoff Hall

A.4.4. Information on the time and venue of the Initial Meeting for the competing soloists (see clause A.1.4.1) and the competing ensembles (see clause A.1.4.2) will be announced later.

A.4.8. The award ceremony and the final concert of the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition will take place
on 31 October 2024 at 19:00 in the Rachmaninoff Hall
of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.

A.5. Submission of the Application and the Documents

A.5.1. In order to participate in the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition, it is necessary to fill out:

A.5.4. The deadline for submitting the online applications and the documents in order to participate
in the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition is 29 September 2024.

A.6. Financial Term

A.6.2. An amount of the registration fee for participation in the 15th Wind/Percussion Competition is, optionally:

  • (1) 3000 (three thousand) Russian rubles;
  • (2) 236 (two hundred thirty-six) Chinese yuans;
  • (3) 33 (thirty-three) US dollars;
  • (4) 30 (thirty) euros.
