International Scholarly Conference “Terminology and the Process of Name-giving”

12 May 2026 - 13 May 2026 |

In honor of the anniversary of Prof. Mikhail Saponov, D.A.

Scholarly Research Center for Methodology of Historical Music Studies as part of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory’s Department of General Music History is happy to invite speakers (both online and by personal attendance) on the following topics:

  • musical terms and terminological systems in their international usage;

  • translations and different historical variants of the musical term;

  • musical terms beyond the area of music;

  • problems of translating genre designations;

  • the misfortune of ‘name-giving’ as a result of music publishers’ careless attitude: problems of adequate translating both the titles of musical pieces and remarks in the scores;

  • persistent errors in translating authors’ remarks, as well as other verbal barriers on the way to a reliable artistic interpretation of the opus;

  • observations on the transformation of general lexical usage into the specialized one (in musicological texts);

  • specialized vocabulary of Latin-language treatises in their Russian translations;

  • the dilemma of interpreting a unique term from an ancient treatise through either transliteration or
    an introduction of a Russian neologism;

  • topical examples of how the term migrates into musicological texts from general historiography, as well as from the studies of literature and theater.
