International Nikolay Rubinstein Competition for Chamber Ensembles and String Quartets

GENERAL REGULATIONS
Organizer: Moscow State P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory
The Organizing Committee of the Competition is formed and regulated by the organizer.
The Jury of the competition under the direction of People’s Artist of Russia, Head of Chamber Ensemble and Quartet Department, Professor Tigran Alikhanov is formed by the Organizing Committee from a number of the most authoritative musicians – performers and pedagogues from different countries of the world.
Aims and goals of the competition:
- search for and support of the most talented young musicians, aid to their professional formation
- creating conditions for artistic exchange, stimulation of artistic development and enhancement of professional skills of the participants of the competition
- preservation and enhancement of chamber ensemble performance in Russia
- enhancement of national musical education
- advancement of the level of artistic mastery of young musicians cultivation of their artistic and spiritual culture
- attraction of attention of the general public towards chamber music
- activation of chamber music into the context of contemporary musical culture.
The symbols of the Competition, the logo, the layouts of the booklets, diplomas and documents are sanctioned by the Organizing Committee of the Competition.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Only those chamber ensembles the average age of the participants of which does not exceed 30 are eligible to participate in the Competition. The age of the oldest participant of the ensemble at the time of the application shall not exceed 32. Participation of the pedagogue of the ensemble in the group is not permitted.
The following types of ensembles are eligible for participation in the Competition:
- string and woodwind instruments with piano (the number of participants in the ensemble shall not be less than three people)
- piano duos (two pianos or piano four hands)
- string quartets
The participation of one pianist in more than one chamber ensemble is not permitted. Otherwise the Organizing Committee reserves the right of removing one of the ensembles in which the same musician is participating from the Competition upon its judgment.
For application for participation in the Competition each ensemble shall fill out the application form attached to the present regulations. The application form shall be filled out in legible handwriting.
The application fee of $70 (seventy) USA dollars for participants shall be transferred for each member of the ensemble to the account of the Moscow State P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory at the time of sending the application form and the VHS (or DVD) including the receipt of transaction.

The following documents must be enclosed together with the application form:
- Two photographs of the chamber ensemble, size 13õ18, and one photograph of each participant, size 5õ6 (the names and surnames of each participant must be written on the back side of each photograph); all photographs must also be sent in electronic format to the e-mail address of the Composition: rubinstein@mosconsv.ru
- a short artistic biography of the ensemble and the artistic biographies of the participants of the ensemble in free form; the biographies must also be sent in electronic format to the e-mail address of the Competition: rubinstein@mosconsv.ru
- one recommendation from a well-known musician;
- a copy of the passport or a document replacing it of each participant of the ensemble with an indication of the home address for each member of the ensemble
- It is also necessary to indicate the place of getting Russian Federation visa (the nearest Russian consulate)
- a copy of the student identification card or graduate student identification card for each participant of the ensemble
- a reference document from the institution of study with the indication of the department, course, major field of studies and teacher of each of the participant of the ensemble, as well as the telephone and fax numbers of the educational institution
- a receipt of the paid application fee.
The filled out application form, the set of documents indispensible for participation in the Competition and the VHS videocassette (or DVD) with the recording of the programme for the First Tour, meeting the requirements of the Competition, must be sent December 1, 2009 (postmark date) to the following address: Moscow State P. In case of the candidates’ withdrawal from participation at the Competition, and also in case of the jury’s decision to decline the participation of an ensemble in the Second Tour, the documents, VHS (or DVD) videocassette and application fee are not returned.
No later than January 1, 2010 all the ensembles admitted to the Second Tour shall be sent an official notification with the indication of the date of their arrival to the Second Tour of the Competition.
The participants of the ensembles admitted to the Second Tour must arrive to Moscow on the exact dates indicated by the Organizing Committee in the official notification.
Any changes in the programmes of the Second and Third Tours must be reported by the participants no later than February 1, 2010 and are subject to a mandatory approval by the Organizing Committee of the Competition.
HOLDING THE COMPETITION
The Competition shall be held in three tours:
- The First Tour shall be held according to the video recordings
- The Second and Third Tours shall be held in the Small Hall of the Conservatory from March 22-28, 2010.
Winners of other national and international competitions are allowed to participate in the First Tour.
Decisions concerning admittance of ensembles to participation in the Second Tour shall be made by a special committee directed by the chairman of the Jury of the Competition.
The order of performances by the participants of the Second Tour shall be determined by ballot. All the participants of the ensembles admitted to the Second Tour must be present at the ballot procedure and the informational meeting, which shall take place a day prior to the beginning of the Competition auditions of the Second Tour.
Prior to the Second and Third Tours the participants of the Competition are granted permission to use the classes of Moscow Conservatory for rehearsals as well as one acoustic rehearsal at the Small Hall of the Conservatory.
No more than 20 ensembles shall be admitted to the Second Tour.
No more than 6 ensembles shall be admitted to the Third Tour.
The order of performance of the compositions in the Second Tour shall be determined by the participants of the Competition.
The results of the Second and Third Tours shall be announced after their finishing.
The decisions of the Jury are final and are not disputable.
FINANCIAL REGULATIONS OF THE COMPETITION
Travel fare to Moscow and back and other expenses connected with staying in Moscow and during participation in the Second and Third Tours of the Competition shall be met by personal means of the participants or the means of the organizations directing them.
The visa support and processing of invitations for the participants from abroad shall be carried out by the Organizing Committee of the Competition.
Upon receipt of the official notification and invitation from the Organizing Committee the participants from abroad admitted to the Second Tour of the competition must turn to their nearest Russian Consulate to apply for their visas. All the expenses for visa application following the regulations of the Russian Consulates shall be met by the participants themselves or by the organizations directing them.
PRIZES AND AWARDS
The Organizing Committee offers three Prizes and two Diplomas:
- FIRST PRIZE – 200 000 rubles
- SECOND PRIZE – 150 000 rubles
- THIRD PRIZE – 100 000 rubles
- TWO DIPLOMAS – 50 000 rubles each
The ensembles participating in the Third Tour who have not received prizes and diplomas shall be given honorary certificates of participants of the Competition.
Monetary prizes shall be paid to the participants in Russian rubles with the tax deductions regulated by the Russian law.
In order to receive the prizes the participants must submit their passport.
The Jury of the Competition reserves the right within the limits of the established prizes not to award any of them or to divide the prizes into several parts.
Moscow Conservatory pledges to provide the ensemble winning the First Prize of the Competition to present the gratuitous possibility of performance (of a solo concert) in one of its chamber halls (the Small Hall or the Rachmaninov Hall of Moscow Conservatory) within a year after the Competition.
Additional prizes, awards and gifts for the participants of the Second and Third Tours may be offered by social organizations, foundations and mass media, who are the Competition’s informational partners, upon agreement with the Organizing Committee. Decisions to award special prizes and awards shall be done upon agreement with the Jury of the Competition.
THE PROGRAMME
Each composition must be performed in only one of the three tours.
It is allowed to perform the incomplete compositions in the First and Second Tours. In the Third Tour all compositions must be performed in their entirety.
The programme of the First Tour (video recording)
Duration – not more than 20 minutes
One original composition by one of the following composers: Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert (without repetition of the expositions)
Requirements for video recording:
- professional quality
- PAL/SECAM or the NTSC system
- The medium carrier must bear an inscription with the indication of the name of the ensemble, the names and surnames of its participants and the titles of the composition
The programme of the Second Tour (Small Hall of Moscow Conservatory)
Duration – not more than 45 minutes
Two original compositions:
- A significant composition by one of the following composers: Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Frederic Chopin, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Antonin Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Hugo Wolf, Ernst Chausson, Gabriel Fauré
- A composition written in the 20th century
The programme of the Third Tour (Small Hall of Moscow Conservatory)
A significant composition by one of the following Russian composers: Mikhail Glinka, Alexander Alyabiev, Alexander Borodin, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, Sergey Taneyev, Alexander Glazunov, Anton Arensky, Sergey Rachmaninov, Nikolay Medtner, Alexander Grechaninov, Nikolay Tcherepnin.
SPECIAL REGULATIONS
The participants of the competition shall not receive any honorarium for either the performance at the Competition or for any subsequent utilization of the recordings or broadcasts of these performances.
The Organizing Committee of the Competition holds exclusive rights for the realization of the audio and video recordings and broadcasts of the Competition’s auditions and the Final Concert of the winners of the Competition.
The winners of the Competition are required to perform gratuitously at the Final Concert of the Competition.
All the participants of the Second and Third Tours are presented with the possibility to use gratuitously and in accordance with the established regulations to use the auditoriums and the instruments of Moscow Conservatory.
The application, signed by the applicants wishing to participate in the Competition, presents itself a document of agreement of all the before mentioned terms.
In case of any arising disagreements upon the interpretation of the present terms of the International Nikolay Rubinstein Competition of Chamber Ensembles and String Quartets Russian shall be considered the sole authoritative text.
