REGULATIONS FOR THE COMPETITION
The competition invites for participation young musicians whose age at the moment of submission (before 1 December 2009) is between 18 and 32 years old.
The competition shall be carried out in four stages:
- Preliminary Selection (according to videocassettes)
- First Round (2-4 February 2010, Myaskovsky Hall (former White Hall) of Moscow Conservatory)
- Second Round (6-7 February 2010, Rachmaninov Hall of Moscow Conservatory)
- Third Round (9 February 2010, Small Hall of Moscow Conservatory)
For the Preliminary Audition it is necessary to submit before 1 December 2009, along with the completed application and documentation for participation in the competition, a video recording in the mediums of VHS or DVD, corresponding of the following conditions:
- the video recording shall be of excellent quality (preferably of a professional standard) in the format of PAL/SECAM or NTSC
- the video recording shall present a performance of a programme of the choice of the applicant of no more than 20 minutes of duration, compiled of compositions of various styles and epochs
- the video medium of VHS or DVD must be inscribed – the applicant`s name and surname and the names of the compositions must be clearly indicated. The repertoire presented on the video recordings must not be included in the programme of the competition auditions.
No more than 30 performers shall be accepted to the first tour.
The programme of performance on the First Round must include:
- One Toccata by G. Frescobaldi or M. Rossi
- One of the following Preludes and Fugues from Volume II of J.S. Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier”:
- BWV 877 – Prelude and Fugue in D-sharp minor
- BWV 879 – Prelude and Fugue in E minor
- BWV 882 – Prelude and Fugue in F-sharp major
- BWV 883 – Prelude and Fugue in F-sharp minor
- BWV 887 – Prelude and Fugue in G-sharp minor
- BWV 890 – Prelude and Fugue in B-flat major
- BWV 892 – Prelude and Fugue in B major
- A suite by Louis Couperin or J. A. D`Anglebert, consisting of one Prelude non mesure from the following list:
- Louis Couperin – Prelude in d, Prelude in a “Prélude à l`imitation de Mr. Froberger”
- J. A. D’Anglebert – Prelude in d, Prelude in G
and four pieces – Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue in the same key (including the relative major/minor) as the Prelude (A Prelude and two of the dances will be chosen for performance by the jury)
- One virtuosic piece by a French composer from the following list:
- J. P. Rameau – “Les Cyclopes”, “Les trois mains”
- À. Forqueray (transcription for harpsichord by J.B.A. Forqueray) – “Jupiter”, “La Leclair”
- C. B. Balbastre – “La Suzanne”
- J. N. P. Royer – “La Marche des Scythes”, “Le Vertige”
- J. Duphly – Chaconne (from Troisieme Livre pour Clavecin), “La Cazamajor” (from Premiere Livre pour Clavecin)
The overall duration of the programme shall not exceed 30 minutes. The order of the performance of the programme of the First Round shall be determined by the participants.
No more than 12 performances shall be admitted to the Second Round following the conclusions of the auditions of the First Round.
The programme of performance in the Second Round must include:
- John Bull: In nomine IX
- One English Suite or Partita (BWV 825-830) by J. S. Bach (the jury reserve the right to choose the movements to be performed)
- One Sonata by Johann Christian or Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach from the following list:
- J. C. Bach: op. 5 ¹ 5 in E major, ¹ 6 in C minor, op. 17 ¹ 2 in C minor, ¹ 3 in E-flat major
- C. P. E. Bach: from the “Württemberg” Sonatas – ¹ 1 in A minor, ¹ 4 in B-flat major, ¹ 6 in B minor, from the “Prussian” Sonatas – ¹ 4 in C minor, ¹ 6 in A major
- Johann Gottfried Pratsch (Ivan Prach): “Fandango”
The overall duration of the programme must not exceed 45 minutes. The order of the compositions performed in the Second Round shall be determined by the participants of the competition.
No more than six performers shall be admitted to the Third Round following the results of the audition of the Second Round.
The programme of performance on the Third Round must include the following compositions:
- Two pieces by F. Geminiani from the “Pieces for Clavier based on Various Compositions by Mr. Geminiani, arranged by himself” from the following list:
One piece among the following:
- Prelude in D major
- Tendrement in g minor
- Tendrement in a minor
And another one among the following:
- Gayment in D major
- Vivement in A major
- Vivement in d minor
- J. S. Bach: Concerto for clavier and strings in E major (BWV 1053) or C. P. E. Bach: Concerto for clavier and strings in D minor (Wq 23/H 427, recommended edition – Breitkopf & Härtel No. 3771)
The overall duration of the programme must not exceed 40 minutes.
The compositions in the Third Round must be performed in the following order:
The facsimile editions of “Fandango” by Pratsch and pieces by F. Geminiani are published in the official website of Moscow Conservatory.
The ensemble partners for performance at the concert shall be presented by the Organizing Committee of the Competition. Rehearsals, lasting 60 minutes, shall be conducted on 8 February 2010 at the Small Hall of Moscow Conservatory.
The Conclusive Concert and the Ceremony for Presentation of Awards shall take place on 10 February 2010 at the Small Hall of the Conservatory.
FINANCIAL REGULATIONS OF PARTICIPATION IN THE COMPETITION
No entrance fee is required.
The transportation fare to Moscow and back and other expenses connected with the sojourn in Moscow during the time of the Competition shall be met covered by the participants’ personal means or the means of the organization directing them.
Visa support and the official registration of invitations for participants from abroad are provided for by the Organizing Committee of the Competition.
The Organizing Committee will provide possible support for finding and booking cheap hotels for participants.
Upon receipt of the official notification and invitation from the Organizing Committee, the participants from abroad, who will have passed onto the First Round of the Competition, must go to the nearest Russian Consulate for application for their visas. All the expenses for processing the visas, in accordance with the requirements of the Russian Consulates, shall be met by the participants themselves or the organizations directing them.
PRIZES
The Organizing Committee of the The First International Volkonsky Harpsichord Competition is hereby announcing the following prizes:
- First Prize 160.000 (one hundred and sixty thousand) rubles
- Second Prize 120.000 (one hundred and twenty thousand) rubles
- Third Prize 80.000 (eighty thousand) rubles
- Three diplomas for the winners of the Competitions of 20.000 (twenty thousand) rubles each
The Grand Prix (for the recipient of the First Prize) – a solo recital at the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles during the season of 2010.
The monetary prizes for the winners of the Competition shall be paid in rubles with the deduction of taxes established by the laws of Russia.
In order to obtain the prizes the participants must submit the following documents:
- For citizens of the Russian Federation – passport, Pension Insurance Certificate and Taxpayer’s Identification Number
- For citizens from other countries (including countries of the CIS) – passport
The Jury of the Competition holds the right within the limits of the announced prizes not to award any of them or to divide the prizes between the performers (except for the First Prize).
Additional prizes, awards and gifts may be established for the participants of the Second and Third Round by social organizations, foundations and mass media in accordance with the Organizing Committee. The decision to award special prizes and awards to the participants of the Competition must be conformed with the Jury of the Competition.
INDISPENSABLE DOCUMENTS AND THE ORDER OF SUBMITTING THE APPLICATION
For submission of the documents for participation in the Competition it is indispensable to fill out the enclosed application form. The application form must be filled out in legible handwriting or typed on a computer.
The application form must be accompanied with the following documents:
- Two photographs size 13x18 and one photograph size 5x6 of each candidate (the back side must bear the inscription of his or her name and surname), all photographs must also be sent by e-mail to the following address: harpsichordcompetition@mosconsv.ru
- A Xerox of the passport of each participant
- A videocassette of the VHS (or DVD) type, which corresponds to the aforementioned conditions
The decision of accepting the performers to participate in the First Round is made by a special committee headed by the chairman of the Jury. At a time no later than on 15 December 2009 all participants accepted to the First Round of the Competition shall be sent official notifications (with the indication of the date on which they must arrive to the Competition).
In the case that the candidates are not admitted to the Competition, and also in the case they are denied participation in the First Round of the Competition, the documents and videocassette are not returned.
The participants of the First Round must arrive in Moscow in accordance with the dates indicated by the Organizing Committee in the official notification.
The order of participation of the participants of the Competition is determined by casting lots and is maintained until the end of the Competition.
Any changes in the programme after the date of acceptance of the application are permitted only in exceptional cases in accordance with the Organizing Committee and the Jury of the Competition.
The decisions made by the Jury are final and are not subject to reconsideration.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
The participants of the Competition are presented with adequate conditions for practicing in the classrooms (no less than an hour a day before the First Round; no less than two hours a day before the Second and Third Rounds), and one rehearsal each before each Round on the stage, where the respective audition of the competition is to take place.
The Organizing Committee of the Competition will provide the harpsichords for participants’ performances and rehearsals from the following list:

The application form signed by the participants of the Competition presents itself as a testimony of acceptance of all the aforementioned conditions.
The participants of the Competition do not receive any honorarium either for participating in the Competition or for any subsequent usage of the recordings and broadcasts of these performances. The Winners of the Competition are required to give a gratuitous performance at the Conclusive Concert of the Competition.
The Organizing Committee of the Festival holds the exclusive rights for the realization of the audio and video recordings and the broadcasting of the Competition’s auditions and the Conclusive Concert of the Winners of the Competition.
In case of arising of arguments in the interpretation of the present stipulations of the Competition, the Russian version of the text shall be counted as the sole correct version.
