The date of opening of the Small Hall – 25 October (7 November) 1898 was also marked by «the musical morning in memory of Tchaikovsky» (it was 5 years from the composer’s death).
Up to 1959 the Hall had an organ by Ladegasta firm – a gift that was made to the Conservatory in 1886. The modern organ was purchased in Potsdam, Germany and manufactured by Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau GmbH company.
With its ideal acoustics attracting the audiences the Hall is famous for its chamber concerts. It is also a perfect venue for class concerts, competitions and festivals – including the Tchaikovsky Competition. Now the Small Hall building is known as the Sergey Taneev building (formerly the First study building of the Moscow conservatory).
