Gheorghe Enescu

(1881–1955)

Gheorghe Enescu was a Romanian composer, violinist, conductor, teacher and public figure, active in the sphere of music, an academician of the Romanian Academy (1932), a member of the “Santa Cecilia” National Academy (Italy, 1931) and a member of the Institut de la France (1936). He was a composition student of Jules Massenet and Gabriel Faure.

He was the leader of the Romanian school of music composition in the 20th century, having achieved word fame for this. He toured throughout many countries (including Russia in 1909 and 1917) and gave five recitals in the USSR, visiting Moscow in 1946. Among his compositions are: the opera “Oedipus” (1936, produced in Paris), a symphonic poem, three symphonies (1905-1918), three orchestral suites, the “Romanian Rhapsody” (1901), the Chamber Symphony (for 12 instruments, 1954), music for chamber ensembles and solo piano (three sonatas, two piano quartets), choral works and short vocal pieces.
