General Provisions

1. The founder of the First Boris Tevlin International Competition of Choral Conductors (hereinafter to be referred to as “Competition”) is Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (hereinafter to be referred to as “Moscow Conservatory”), with a support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.

2. The Competition shall be held once per three years.

3. The First Competition will be held from the 10th till the 17th of March 2014 at the Myaskovsky, Rachmaninoff and Great Halls of Moscow Conservatory.

4. The Organizing Committee shall approve the branding and the logotype of the Competition, as well as the layouts of its booklet, diplomas and merit certificates.

5. The Organizing Committee shall be formed and approved by the founder of the Competition.

6. The international jury of the Competition shall include established teachers, musicians and choral conductors. The list of the jury members shall be approved by the respective resolution of Moscow Conservatory. The jury chairman will be Prof. Rodion Shchedrin (Russia), a composer, People’s Artist of the USSR, a laureate of the State Awards.

7. The Competition has the following purposes and objectives:

  • to improve the status of the academic choir conductor as a profession;
  • to look for and to support the most talented young choirmasters, as well as to render help in their professional growth;
  • to create favorable conditions for creative exchange, stimulating aesthetic education and increasing the competitors’ professional skillfulness;
  • to develop the national music education;
  • to draw a wide audience’s attention to the contemporary choral performance;
  • to promote contemporary Russian and foreign composers’ choral works.

The Order of Submitting the Applications

1. Only those persons who turn 18 full years but do not turn 34 full years by 10 March 2014 may participate in the Competition.

2. A maximum of 24 participants will be admitted to participate in the First Round, provided that their documents are approved (in terms of education, the presence of recommendations, working experience as a choirmaster and the level of the difficulty of pieces selected from the program).

3. The applications for participation in the Competition will be accepted until 1 December 2013.

4. Scanned photocopies of the following documents shall be added to the Application (please download, fill out and forward back):

4.1. for all competitors regardless of their citizenship:

  • the front page of the passport with the photo and personal data;
  • any certificate of music education;
  • an autobiography that should contain: date and place of birth, place of study, time period of study at the time of holding the Competition (in case the participant is a student), the teacher’s full name, information about participation in other competitions (year, country, city, award), as well as any other important information;
  • one color artistic photograph in the form of a JPG file with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi;
  • a receipt of the payment of the admission fee;
  • a competitor’s consent for the processing of his/her personal data (written in a free form and personally signed);

4.2. specifically for competitors who are citizens of Russia — in addition:

  • the passport page with the stamp proving the permanent residence registration;
  • taxpayer’s identification number;
  • the number of the State Pension Insurance Certificate.

5. All documents and photographs must be forwarded to: art-department@mail.ru

6. The admission fee will be:

  • from within Russia — 3000 (three thousand) rubles;
  • from outside Russia — either 100 (one hundred) US dollars or 80 (eighty) euros.

The admission fee must be transferred to the Moscow Conservatory’s bank account.

7. In case a competitor waives to participate, his/her admission fee will not be returned.

9. An official notification will be forwarded not later than 25 December 2013 to all competitors whose documents are approved.

The Order of Holding the Competition

1. Auditions for the Competition will be held publicly at the Moscow Conservatory’s Rachmaninoff Hall and will consist of three rounds: the First and Second Rounds will be held with a piano accompaniment, the Third Round will be a rehearsal with the Moscow Conservatory’s Chamber Choir.

2. The order of the competitors’ performances shall be determined by the Draw prior to the First Round and will remain unchanged until the end of the Competition. All competitors must be present at the Draw and at the Informational Meeting, both scheduled for 10 March 2014.

3. According to a collective decision of the jury, any competitor’s performance may be either shortened or stopped.

4. A maximum of 24 participants will be admitted to participate in the First Round.

5. A maximum of 12 participants will be admitted to participate in the Second Round.

6. A maximum of 8 participants will be admitted to participate in the Third Round.

7. Upon completion of the Second Round, the jury will name the best accompanist.

8. The results will be announced immediately after each round.

Prizes and Awards

1. The Organizing Committee shall announce the following prizes:

  • the First Prize of 150,000 rubles and the title of a laureate of the Competition;
  • the Second Prize of 100,000 rubles and the title of a laureate of the Competition;
  • the Third Prize of 75,000 rubles and the title of a laureate of the Competition;
  • two Honorary Diplomas of 30,000 rubles each.

2. Upon an agreement with the Organizing Committee, any state, public or commercial organizations may establish any special awards for the competitors.

3. The Second Round competitors who were not admitted to participate in the Third Round shall be awarded with merit certificates. The Third Round competitors who did not become the laureates and did not get Honorary Diplomas shall be awarded with finalist certificates.

4. The best two accompanists shall be awarded with diplomas and a premium of 25,000 rubles each.

5. All prizes shall be paid in rubles and subject to taxation in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation. In order to receive the prize, the laureate must submit his/her passport. If the laureate is a citizen of the Russian Federation, he/she must also submit his/her Taxpayer’s ID Number and the number of his/her State Pension Insurance Certificate.

6. Prior to the beginning of the Competition and upon an agreement with the Organizing Committee, any state, public or commercial organizations, as well as any foundations, creative unions, mass media and private persons, may establish any additional prizes, awards and presents for the competitors of the Second and Third Rounds.

7. The jury may:

7.1. either award not all the prizes;

7.2. or award one prize to several competitors.

8. The jury’s decisions are irrevocable and may not be subject to argument.

Financial Terms

1. The competitors’ and their accompanists’ expenses for transportation, accommodation and meals shall be paid either by themselves or by their organizations.

2. The Organizing Committee shall render both visa support and the making of official invitations for all foreign competitors.

3. As soon as the foreign competitor receives an official notification from the Organizing Committee, he/she must apply for a visa at a Consulate of Russia. All expenses for getting the visas according to the requirements of the Consulates of Russia shall be paid either by the competitors themselves or by their organizations.

Special Terms

1. The competitors shall receive no fee either for their performances or for any further use of recordings and broadcasts of their performances.

2. The Organizing Committee shall have exclusive rights for broadcasting, and for selling audio and video recordings of, both the Competition Rounds and the Final Concert of the Laureates.

3. The Competition laureates must perform at the final concert free of charge.

4. Rehearsal rooms in the Moscow Conservatory’s buildings will be available for all competitors in the determined order.

5. The Organizing Committee shall, if necessary, provide the competitors with accompanists for one training rehearsal and one acoustical rehearsal prior to every round, as well as for their performances at the First and Second Rounds.

6. The Organizing Committee shall render assistance to the competitors in getting the scores of the pieces announced on the obligatory program of the Competition.

7. An application signed by a person who wants to participate in the Competition shall witness his/her consent with all the terms listed above.

8. In case any arguments are raised with regard to the interpretation of these Regulations, the Russian text published on the Moscow Conservatory’s website shall have a priority.
