S. Kalinin is honored by the fourth degree Order of Saint Blessed Prince Daniil of Moscow (2003), second degree Order of Friendship (Korea, 2005), “Veteran of Labour” and  “In Memory of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow” medals.


S. Kalinin was born in Kulyab city, the Tadjik Soviet Socialist Republic.

In 1959 he finished Moscow Choral College, and in 1969 he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, Choral Direction Department (under A. V. Sveshnikov, B. I. Kulikov).
In 1972 S. Kalinin graduated from the Post graduate course with Choral Direction specialty (under A. V. Sveshnikov).

Teaching:

Since 1970 S. Kalinin has been working at the Choral Direction Department of the Moscow Conservatory.

He has been teaching Choral Class since 1995 (Professor since 1995). In 1996 S. Kalinin became the Dean of Opera and Symphonic Conducting Department and Artistic director of Moscow Conservatory Students’ Choir.

Since 2007 he has been the Head of Choral Direction Chair of the Moscow Conservatory.

S. Kalinin gives numerous master classes in Russia, Argentina, Byelorussia, Spain and Korea.

Alumni:

Among alumni of the Professor there are more than 50 choral conductors from Russia and abroad (Argentina, China, Ecuador).
Some of them are: N. Averina, L. Baklushin, A. Malyutin, L. Movchan, A. Rudnevsky, V. Valeev, J. Tikhonova and others.

Basic repertoire. Recitals

From 1959 till 1963 S. Kalinin was a choirmaster of Song and Dance Ensemble of the Soviet Army in Germany. In 1963 – 1969 he was a choirmaster of Children’s Choir of  the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. From 1969 till 1987 Kalinin was a chief choirmaster of the USSR State Academic Russian Choir. With the Choir Kalinin performed in Russia and abroad (Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Poland, Slovakia, France, Czechia, Japan).


Since 1996 S. Kalinin has been the artistic director of Moscow Conservatory Students Choir. The repertoire of the Moscow Conservatory Students Choir includes compositions of the following European and Russian composers: J. S. Bach, L. van Beethoven, J. Brahms, B. Britten, C. M. von Weber, C. Debussy, A. Dvorak, G. Mahler, F. Mendelssohn, W. A. Mozart, A. Onneger, F. Poulenc; M. Glinka,  M. Musorgsky, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, S. Rachmaninov, S. Taneyev, P. Tchaikovsky; Y. Butsko, V. Kalistratov, V. Kikta, R. Ledenev, M. Petukhov, N. Sidelnikov, V. Silvestrov, Y. Falik, A. Schnittke, R. Shchedrin and others.

The Choir performs in Russia and abroad, and these days it takes an active part in the international festivals, such as: “Moscow Autumn”, “To the Memory of Igor Stravinsky”, “Year of J. S. Bach’s Music”, “The Heart of Japan” and others. A lot of outstanding musicians collaborated with Kalinin’s Choir, among them G. N. Rozhdestvensky, V. Ashkenazi, K. Abbado, L. V. Nikolaev, Y. I. Simonov and others.  In 2004 and in 2006 the Choir was awarded with the “Grand Prix” at the April Festival in Pyongyang (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea).

Publications:

S. Kalinin is the author of articles and scientific research papers dealing with the question of  choir performance (about Sveshnikov’s work in particular – Kalinin S.  Collaboration with A. V. Sveshnikov in the State Choir.
