About Us
The Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory is one of Russia’s leading institutions of higher musical education and one of the most distinguished centers of musical culture, performance, composition, and music scholarship.
Founded in Moscow in 1866, the Conservatory has played a central role in the development of professional musical education in Russia for more than a century and a half. Its first director was the outstanding pianist, conductor, and composer Nikolai Rubinstein, who devoted himself to establishing a high standard of musical education and to fostering the development of Russian musical culture.
From its earliest years, the Conservatory brought together some of the most remarkable musicians and teachers of its time. Among its early professors was Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, whose work as a teacher and composer became an important part of the Conservatory’s history. In 1940, the institution was officially named after Tchaikovsky.
Tradition and Excellence
Throughout its history, the Moscow Conservatory has combined a strong commitment to musical tradition with the continuing development of artistic and scholarly practice. Generations of outstanding performers, composers, conductors, musicologists, and teachers have studied and worked here.
The Conservatory's alumni and professors include many figures who have made a lasting contribution to Russian and world musical culture, including Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Scriabin, Sergei Taneyev, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich, Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Vladimir Spivakov, Gidon Kremer and many others.
Their artistic and scholarly legacy continues to form an important part of the Conservatory's identity.
Education
Today, the Conservatory provides comprehensive professional education in music. Its academic structure encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including instrumental and vocal performance, opera, orchestral and choral conducting, composition, music theory, music history, and the history and theory of musical performance.
The Conservatory brings together a large community of students, professors, researchers, performers, and creative ensembles. Individual artistic mentorship, intensive practical training, academic study, and performance experience form an integral part of the educational process.
Research and Musical Culture
The Moscow Conservatory is not only an educational institution but also an important center for musical research and cultural activity.
